About

We are a group of professionals working in academia, in learning communities and in digital companies interested in digital sustainability from a socio-environmental and educational perspective.

Through interdisciplinary conversations and study we aim to develop deeper understandings of how we can limit our digital socio-environmental footprint through design level, policy level and individual actions.

A key focus is on developing more sustainable approaches to educational technology use. How do we move from a more-is-better approach to educational technology to more discerning uses which are more sustainable and which enhance education?

Our work links to a Masters level module offered at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester. The Sustainable Educational Technology Development module is, at first glance, a course about educational app development. At its core though are questions about the extent to which technology is implicated in socio-environmental harms, questions that can unsettle and transform the design process.

Such questions are also explored on this site using a range of resources from talks given to our digital sustainability group to blog posts, readings, videos and ‘how to’ guides.

The website aims to be a resource for anyone interested in digital sustainability, particularly digital education policy and sustainability and a means to prompting conversation around digital sustainability.

Past talks and blogs

You can find recordings of previous talks via the Past talks and blogs link.

Events

We have occasional public online and hybrid face-to-face and online talks and events. These are advertised via our Events tab when they are occurring and are open to all.

Readings

Our ‘Readings’ section suggests (academic) readings we find useful. It is interdisciplinary in scope covering a broad range of digital sustainability topics from sustainable interactive design (SID) to inbuilt obsolescence in hardware.
